Brighton's Best Gay Bars, Clubs & LGBTQ+ Venues

Your complete guide to Brighton's legendary queer scene, from iconic seafront bars to underground club nights

By RachelMar 12, 2026

Brighton has been the UK's unofficial LGBTQ+ capital for decades, and the scene shows no sign of slowing down. Kemptown's St James's Street is the beating heart of it all, lined with rainbow flags and packed with bars that range from piano lounges to full-blown club nights. But the scene stretches well beyond one postcode; you will find welcoming LGBTQ+ venues right along the seafront, into the North Laine, across to Hove, and in unexpected corners all over the city. Whether you are after a Sunday roast in a cosy pub, a 3am dancefloor, or a world-class drag show, we have got you covered with some of our favourite spots.

QUEEN OF CRAFT

Charles Street Tap

A staple of gay Brighton for around 20 years, Charles Street Tap is the city's largest gay bar and proudly calls itself "The Queen of Craft." By day you can settle in with an impressive array of craft beers, rare gins, and proper stone-baked pizzas. Come evening, the place transforms with award-winning drag acts, cabaret, DJ nights, and the legendary drag bingo. There is an outdoor patio on Marine Parade where you can watch the world go by with a pint in hand. If you only visit one gay bar in Brighton, make it this one.

SUPERCLUB

Club Revenge

Arguably the most famous LGBTQ+ nightclub in Brighton, and for good reason. Spread across three floors on Old Steine, Club Revenge pulls in everyone from RuPaul's Drag Race stars to international DJs and pop acts. The main room is kitted out with state-of-the-art LED screens and a Funktion One sound system; the Berlin-inspired upper floor has dancing cages; and then there is the roof terrace with those sea and pier views that look even better at 2am. Open Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10:30pm. Sister venue R-Bar is just round the corner for pre-drinks.

SEAFRONT ICON

Legends

A sun trap on Marine Parade with one of the best sea-view terraces on the Brighton gay scene. Now under new ownership with a refreshed wood-panelled interior, Legends is the perfect afternoon drinking spot where you can nurse a cocktail and watch the waves. As the sun goes down, the energy shifts; the Basement Club underneath fires up with nights like Glitter Curious and Friday Night Shift. It is a Brighton institution that has reinvented itself without losing its soul.

GAY INSTITUTION

The Queens Arms

Something of a Brighton gay institution, and you will spot it from a mile off. The brightly painted pink exterior is adorned with rainbow flags and depictions of legendary drag acts. Inside, it is glittery, camp, and gloriously fun. Live drag performances and karaoke keep the energy high, and the crowd is always up for a good time. A must-visit for a right-royal, gay-ol' knees up on George Street in the heart of Kemptown.

COCKTAIL LOUNGE

Affinity Bar

A sleek cocktail space on St James's Street with cool Icelandic "ice bar" lighting and a friendly, mixed crowd who come for the quality spirits and stay for the drag cabaret. Affinity stocks Tom of Finland Vodka, which tells you everything about the vibe. Booking is advised Thursday to Sunday when the place fills up quickly. Formerly Infinity Bar, the revamp has given it a polished edge without losing the neighbourhood warmth that makes Brighton's scene special.

piano bar

Nautilus Lounge

Surreal, cavernous, and oddly decorated in the best possible way. Nautilus Lounge is a grand-piano-brandishing chillout spot with live singers, comfy sofas, and an underwater theme that somehow works beautifully. The cocktails are excellent and the service is warm. If you want a break from the high-energy bars on St James's Street, this is where you come to sink into a sofa and let the evening unfold at its own pace.

SINCE 1979

The Bulldog

A bedrock of Brighton's gay partying since 1979, The Bulldog on St James's Street Mews has seen it all. It is a no-frills, poptastic karaoke pub with dark corners, disco lighting, and an up-for-it mixed crowd. Under new management, the place has been revitalised while keeping its traditional gay boozer charm fully intact. The drink deals are great and the atmosphere is always welcoming. If walls could talk, The Bulldog's would have the best stories in Brighton.

PRE-DRINKS

R-Bar

A two-level, feisty little bar on Marine Parade that is the sister venue to Club Revenge and the perfect warm-up spot before a big night out. The Miami-style pastels and neon signs makeover gives it a playful look, and the super cheap drinks attract a younger crowd including plenty of students. Head upstairs for panoramic seafront views while your pre-drinks are still affordable. It is fun, loud, and does not take itself too seriously.

EVERY NIGHT

Zone Bar

As camp as a row of tents, and proud of it. The Zone on St James's Street delivers karaoke, cabaret, and cracking drink offers with entertainment practically every night of the week. It is centrally located in the heart of Brighton's gay area and provides a judgement-free environment where you can be exactly who you are. The atmosphere is lively without being overwhelming, making it a great starting point if you are new to the scene. Games nights and live music round out a packed weekly programme.

COSY LOCAL

The Marine Tavern

Bijou but goes large on entertainment and ambience. The Marine Tavern on Broad Street is the kind of cosy pub where everybody knows your name, and it is a genuinely friendly place to absorb the Brighton vibe. Saturdays are particularly popular, and themed nights including curry evenings, quizzes, and traditional Sunday roasts give you a reason to keep coming back. It can get crowded given the size, but that is part of the charm. A proper Kemptown local.

PUB GRUB

The Camelford Arms

An LGBTQ+ pub just seconds from the sea on Camelford Street, with pub grub that is worth the visit alone. The interior is all bare brick and warmth, with a double fireplace, a long bar, and a quirky Moroccan-style patio out the back that catches you by surprise. The crowd is friendly, generally over-30, and mixed-but-mainly-gay-male. The regulars clearly agree this is one of the best spots on the scene for proper food and a proper pint.

THEATRE BAR

The Actors

Tucked below the theatre in the iconic Marlborough Hotel building, which has a long history of LGBTQ+ productions. The bar itself is all deep colours and wooden panelling, split into two distinct rooms. It is chilled, warm, and friendly, and as they like to say, "no drama here, despite the name." The pizzas are delicious and surprisingly good for a theatre bar. Drag brunches and karaoke nights add to the entertainment, making this one of the more relaxed spots on the Kemptown circuit.

PRIDE-OWNED

Ironworks Studios

Brighton Pride-owned LGBTQ+ performance space and TV studio near the station, bordering the North Laine. The programme is incredible: musicians, comedians, drag queens, and poets all take the stage here, and it is home to the acclaimed Forge Comedy Club hosted by Stephen Grant. What makes Ironworks special is that all productions support LGBTQ+ charities including the Brighton Rainbow Fund. Every ticket you buy does genuine good.

HOVE GEM

The Grosvenor

Proof that the LGBTQ+ scene extends well beyond Kemptown. The Grosvenor on Western Street in Hove is a welcoming bar with dedicated regulars, weekly drag bingo, cabaret shows, and Small Business Socials that bring the local community together. The staff are famously friendly, the drinks are excellent value, and it is extremely dog-friendly, so you will see plenty of four-legged regulars at the bar. A proper neighbourhood venue with real heart.

BONKERS BINGO

Bedford Tavern

A mock-Tudor gem over in Hove with wooden beams, snugs, and a mixed crowd who come for the community feel. The Bedford is famous for its infamous Bonkers Musical Bingo nights, which are exactly as chaotic and fun as they sound. Sunday roasts are popular too, so book ahead. There is a small outdoor terrace with sort-of sea views if you squint. A cosy, welcoming LGBTQ+ pub that proves the best bars are not always the loudest.

HIGH CAMP

Regency Tavern

Fabulously flamboyant and proud of it. Regency Tavern tucked away in between Russel and Regency Square is old-school high camp at its finest: think pianists playing gay classics, drag queens holding court, gilded stuccos, and leopard print furnishings. The décor alone is worth the visit, and the atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and wonderfully over the top. If you want a taste of Brighton's theatrical, glamorous side, pull up a leopard-print chair.

QUEER NIGHTS

Chalk Nightclub

Chalk in Pool Valley hosts some of Brighton's most unapologetically queer club nights. Think pole dancers, drag hosts, and impromptu performances that blur the line between club night and performance art. The vibe is young, creative, and inclusive. It is not a dedicated gay venue seven days a week, but when the queer nights are on, they are something genuinely special. Check the listings and time your visit right.

WTN CLUB

Komedia

This beloved North Laine venue on Gardner Street is known for comedy and live music, but it also hosts queer and alternative comedy, drag shows, and quarterly club nights celebrating women, trans, and non-binary people and their allies. Komedia is a trusted name in Brighton nightlife. Keep an eye on the programme for the next queer night and get your tickets early; they sell out.

UNDERGROUND

The Basement Club

Underneath Legends on Marine Parade, The Basement Club is where the late-night action happens. DJs play into the early hours, entry is often free, and the atmosphere gets properly clubby once the bar upstairs winds down. It is dark, sweaty, and exactly what you want at 1am when the pubs have shut. If you are still standing after last orders, head downstairs.
