Fortune of War
No pub has been serving Brighton's seafront longer than the Fortune of War, and none is more famous. It sits on Kings Road with the pebbles beginning where the pavement ends, and because the interior is genuinely tiny, the move is to stake out a length of sea wall, sort out a round for the hens and let the city drift past in front of you. Arrive around golden hour and the view down the coast will talk somebody into staying for another. Open the afternoon here, then wander on along the front.
The Setting Sun
The name is a promise, and the Setting Sun keeps it nightly. Sat at the top of Windmill Street in Hanover, its south-facing garden holds the sunshine all afternoon, and once the light finally drops, the panorama over Brighton's rooftops to the sea is something special, precisely where the bride will want her photo taken. Beneath the view is a proper community pub: well-kept ales, good food, locals who will chat to anyone. Sunny weekends fill it fast, so a big group should arrive on the early side.
Rockwater
Spread across several levels of the Hove seafront, Rockwater can make an afternoon feel like a holiday booked on impulse. Up on the rooftop terrace, cocktails, prosecco and seafood sharing plates come with a clear run to the horizon, and a hen group can happily lose an entire day here. One caveat: the terrace is fiercely popular in summer, and a table for ten needs arranging rather than hoping. Book ahead, and the planning pays for itself.
Bison Beach Bar
Bison is what Brighton looks like when it commits to a real beach bar. The open terrace on Madeira Drive faces due south, catching sun from morning until the light finally slides behind you, with the sea just a few steps beyond the decking. Beer brewed under the Bison name is excellent, and the food is sturdy enough to keep a long session on track, which matters when there are a dozen of you. Relaxed by day, livelier come evening, and hen groups are made properly welcome.
Shelter Hall
Menu deadlock is the classic big-group problem, and Shelter Hall was practically designed to solve it. The Kings Road arches hold an entire food market, with kitchens turning out everything from sushi to woodfired pizza and a bar pouring cocktails and local beers, all of it carried out to a terrace overlooking the beach. Every hen orders exactly what she fancies and the compromise conversation never needs to happen. Claim one of the long tables and give it the rest of the afternoon.
The Windmill
Climb to the top of Upper North Street and the Windmill repays the effort with a garden that keeps the sun from mid-afternoon well into the evening. This is a warm, well-run local: dependable ales, honest pub food, and rather more outdoor space than the frontage suggests, all of it lovely in the golden hour. The Sunday roasts are good enough to shape a weekend itinerary around. Choose it when the hen party wants Brighton's charm at a gentler volume.
Babble
Squint on a bright afternoon at Babble and Hove could pass for the south of France. The decked terrace sits directly on the seafront at Kingsway, the cocktails are the standout, and a table of sharing plates has a way of stretching lunch until it quietly turns into evening. If your hen house is over in Hove, treat this one as non-negotiable the moment the sun appears.
Grand Central
Steps from the station on Surrey Street, Grand Central holds one of the best rooftop terraces in Brighton. The sun sits on it all afternoon and there are no reservations taken, which makes it the perfect snap decision when the hens arrive to find blue sky waiting. Prosecco comes at a price the shared kitty will thank you for, and the view reaches right across the city. Fresh off the train in sunshine? Go straight up.
The Garden Bar
Hove's largest beer garden is a bold claim, and the Garden Bar on Portland Road backs it up. Decking, picnic tables, heated private booths and a dedicated BBQ section mean a hen party of any size fits without a single squabble over seats. The drinks list stretches from craft ales to frozen cocktails, and booths can be booked so the whole group holds together. When you need space and sunshine guaranteed in advance, this is the safe bet.
Oculist
The roof terrace is what you come for: sun catching the Pavilion chimneys, a playlist that keeps landing, and the one-drink plan collapsing without anyone minding. Downstairs, the Oculist tips its hat to the optician's shop it once was, all plush textures and glints of gold, with a cocktail list that shows imagination without straining for it.
