Brighton & Hove has firmly established itself as one of the UK’s most exciting culinary destinations. Gone are the days when a trip to the seaside meant soggy fish and chips (though we have great ones of those too!).
The city is now home to a vibrant mix of Michelin-recommended spots, innovative small-plate eateries, and sustainable dining pioneers. From the winding alleys of The Lanes to the breezy seafront, here is our curated guide to the best restaurants in Brighton.
1. The Coal Shed
If you are a meat lover, The Coal Shed is non-negotiable. Located near the Jubilee Library, this restaurant specializes in steak and fish cooked over coal. It’s robust, smoky, and incredibly satisfying.
Their Sunday sharing roasts are legendary in the city—huge platters of dry-aged beef, roasted potatoes, and cauliflower cheese that you'll be dreaming about for days. Booking is essential.
2. 64 Degrees
Tucked away in the South Lanes, this tiny open-kitchen restaurant by Chef Michael Bremner is the jewel in Brighton's crown. The concept is small plates designed for sharing, and the menu changes constantly based on produce availability.
Sitting at the pass and watching the chefs assemble intricate dishes with tweezers is dinner and a show combined. It’s intimate, intense, and utterly delicious.

3. Bincho Yakitori
Inspired by the izakayas of Tokyo, Bincho Yakitori on Preston Street offers authentic Japanese grilled skewers and small plates. It’s loud, chaotic, and smells amazing.
Don't miss the Chicken Skin skewers or the Korean Fried Cauliflower. Wash it all down with a frozen beer or a flight of sake. It's the perfect spot for a fun, casual dinner with friends.
4. Terre à Terre
Brighton is the unofficial vegetarian capital of the UK, and Terre à Terre is its palace. For over 20 years, they have been proving that meat-free dining can be indulgent, complex, and exciting.
The "Terre à Tapas" sharing plate is the best way to experience their greatest hits. Even the most devout carnivores leave here fully satisfied.
"One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well." – Virginia Woolf
5. Riddle & Finns
For seafood, Riddle & Finns is the gold standard. They have two locations: the original "Champagne & Oyster Bar" in the Lanes (high tables, candlelit, very atmospheric) and a newer restaurant on the beach rotunda with sweeping sea views.
Order a platter of fruits de mer and a bottle of crisp white wine. It’s the quintessential Brighton seaside luxury experience.
6. Etch.
Located in Hove, Etch. is the brainchild of MasterChef: The Professionals winner Steven Edwards. It offers a set tasting menu (ranging from 5 to 9 courses) that focuses on seasonal British produce.
The room is stunning—modern, dark, and sophisticated with an open kitchen. It’s the ideal destination for a special anniversary or celebration dinner.
Foodie Tip
Many of Brighton's best restaurants are located on Preston Street. If you can't get a reservation elsewhere, take a walk down this street—it's packed with incredible independent eateries.
